One of the most common phobias is claustrophobia, or the fear of enclosed spaces. Research found that 5-11% of people asked before they had a "Closed" MRI scan done, reported having claustrophobia. Furthermore, it was found that 7% of patients that reported they did not have claustrophobia, had to terminate the scanning procedure prematurely because they found they were claustrophobic. Another 30% reported feeling very uncomfortable due to the necessity to lie in a confined space for a long time. However, there is a solution-"Open" MRIs! Open MRIs allow scans to be done without being enclosed in a box-like environment. If your physician orders an MRI of somekind, you can have your physician order an Open MRI and avoid any claustrophic experiences. All MRI's are not equal, thank goodness!
